It took us 12 hours on the train Sunday. Slept most of the way. Still jet lagged. Checked into nice http://www.hotelpark.si/ where we got an upgrade from the hostel part to the hotel part. We are up early and will go for traditional breakfast food at a favorite student hangout in a converted monastery, then a town tour at 10.00am for 2 hours. Slovenia used to be part of Yugoslavia, but broke away in 1991 fairly uneventfully. It has strong German and Italian influences with a touch of Ottoman/Mediterranean of course. For all of you HouseMaster folks who can relate, it is the size of New Jersey with 1 quarter the population. Very pretty here.
End of Day Monday/ Took 3 hour guided walking tour of city. Just missed Laura Bush!

The prez is here for EU Summit in Kranj, Slovenia. Everything revolves around Preseren Square and nearby Triple Bridge . . . architected by favorite son Joze Plecnik. Took funiculare up to Ljubljana Castle. Tiday and industrious. This place is still undiscovered by Americans and there are hardly any police around. Ended up with boat ride up and down the Ljubljanica River.
Off to all-day excursion tomorrow to Karst region to see caves, Predjama Castle, Scokjan Caves, Lippizaner stallions (their stables are here).

I 'm reading your posts. Do enjoy the various beers as you mosey around Eastern Europe, but don't let Emily drink you under the table--one of you has to make it to all those train connections. Maybe Hal or someone else could add a map to your blog page to show your specific route with each zig and zag. Ljubljana looks absolutely lovely. Have fun. --Rowe
